The Warden of the Year program recognizes an outstanding correctional leader whose service, integrity, and leadership have made a meaningful impact on their facility, staff, and community. This annual honor celebrates wardens and superintendents who exemplify professionalism, innovation, and commitment to public safety while leading with accountability and respect. Nominations are submitted by peers and colleagues across the corrections field, highlighting leaders who set the standard for excellence.

Founded by retired warden Percy Pitzer, the Pitzer Family Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that breaks generational cycles of incarceration by providing scholarships, trade skill training, and mentorship for children of incarcerated parents and returning citizens. NAAWS is proud to stand alongside PFEF in advancing education, second chances, and safer communities.





Honoring Extraordinary Courage
The Medal of Valor may be awarded to one or more recipients and is presented during the Warden of the Year Banquet at the annual NAAWS Training Conference. Awardees and their Agency Heads are expected to attend the banquet for formal recognition.
